Violence against women – as American as apple pie

When presidential wannabe Donald Trump famously boasted on CNN that he would “be the best thing that ever happened to women,” most women did not fall for it.

On Friday night, millions of people world wide tuned in to hear an 11 year old tape of Trump boasting about how stars can “do anything” to women, including grab “them by the pussy.”

During the second presidential debate, Trump repeatedly defended his comments as “locker room talk,” as if it is normal and acceptable and common for men to talk about violating women. This is rape culture.

What Trump fails to realise is that when a person with power, like Trump, glorifies sexual violence against women, it further normalises violence against women.

Nearly 1 in 5 Australian women have experienced sexual violence and, 1 in 6 Australian women have experienced physical or sexual violence from a current or former partner.

Good men and women treat those around them with decency and respect. This is clearly not a lesson Trump ever learned.

Trump’s comments reignite a serious problem across the free world –  the degradation of women and girls. It’s not just shameful, it’s down right dangerous!
